Neonatal Diarrhoea

Calf neonatal diarrhoea, also known as neonatal calf scours, is a common and potentially serious problem in newborn calves.  It is characterised by the presence of watery or bloody diarrhoea, which can lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalances and malnutrition.

Causes include bacterial infections, viral infections, protozoal infections and dietary issues.  Prevention typically involves vaccination, enough quality colostrum early on and good hygiene management.  When addressing diarrhoea, antimicrobials may be appropriate to treat animals when necessary, along with fluid replacing oral rehydration therapy to support recovery.  Early detection and intervention is key to minimising the risk of complications and ensuring a good outcome for the affected animal.
